Job Title:  Commercial Finance Manager

Job Number:  78144

Why BAT Japan
You'll work directly with the people running the brands and the accounts, in a market where the commercial questions are genuinely unresolved.

  • A market-leading annual performance bonus (subject to eligibility)

  • Health cover, transport support and a flexible holiday plan with additional incentives

  • English and Japanese language training, delivered on company time

  • A published capability framework for every role and grade — and, as the career path above shows, a route out of this seat that's documented rather than implied

  • Global Top Employer for the ninth consecutive year — certified across five regions and a record 44 countries

Tokyo, Japan · Full-time · Manager

Finance for people who want to argue about the plan, not just close the books on it.

BAT is a global multi-category consumer goods business. Our purpose is to create A Better Tomorrow™, with a vision to build a smokeless world — as at 31 December 2025, 34.1m consumers used our Smokeless Products, generating 18.2% of Group revenue. Shifting a business of this size means constant decisions about where money goes and what we stop doing. Commercial Finance is where those decisions get tested.

The role
You partner Marketing, Commercial and Supply Chain in Japan, sitting in the Commercial Finance team under the Commercial Finance Controller. You'll be expected to challenge assumptions in the meeting rather than in the follow-up email, and to make a case for the initiatives you believe in. There are no direct reports; your influence comes from the quality of your analysis and your working relationships.

What you'll own

  • Financial partnership to Marketing and Commercial — the guidance that shapes decisions before they're made

  • Evaluation of business initiatives using return on investment, net present value, payback and scenario analysis — translated into a recommendation, not a spreadsheet

  • The budget process with Marketing and Commercial, including whether spend is actually landing where the plan said it would

  • Variance analysis that budget holders can act on, delivered early enough to matter

  • Support to the annual plan and quarterly budget cycles, and the accuracy of what we report

  • Financial controls and governance across functions — kept effective without making the commercial teams slower

  • Material for senior, regional and global stakeholders that makes a decision easy to take

What you'll bring

  • Confident investment analysis, plus the commercial reading of what the numbers mean

  • Enough understanding of marketing and trade activity to challenge it credibly

  • Experience of pricing and excise, and of a full company planning cycle

  • Curiosity and a willingness to challenge the status quo persuasively

Qualifications

  • 5+ years as a finance business partner, ideally in consumer goods

  • Fluent Japanese and English

Where this leads
Typical next steps are Senior Commercial Finance Manager, then Commercial or Corporate Finance Controller, or Finance Director in a small-to-mid-size market outside Japan.
